The Municipal Committee came into existence in 1959 under Basic Democracies Ordinance 1959, when the population of Khairpur was only a few thousands. The population increased due to development of city and influx of people from rural areas to urban areas. According to 2017 senses shows a figure of 4,40,752 souls in Taluka Khairpur in which1,83,181 souls in city Khairpur 41% population living in Municipal limits. The Municipal committee is spread over 9 Sq: kilometers area.

Khairpur's Municipal Committee consists of 29Wards, thickly populated area, as per Sindh Local Government Act 2013 amended in 2016 responsibility of the Council is to provide basic Civic Amenities to the people living within the jurisdiction and Municipal Committee Khairpur is trying to provide basic civic amenities to their people better than better in due letter and spirit as laid down in the law.

Khairpur

Khairpur is third largest in terms of area (15910 sq km) and fifth most populous district of Sindh province. According to census report of 2017 the total population of District 24,05,190 in which 67.69% rural and 32.31% urban. Khairpur is one of the historic cities of Sindh and 46th largest city in Pakistan by population. Administratively there are 8 Taluka's, 88 UCs, 20 Town Committees and 3 Municipal Committees.

ABOUT KHAIRPUR

It was capital of defunct Khairpur state of Mir's till 1955 when the state of Khairpur merged in Sindh province. It is now district head quarter away from Karachi 429 km and from Islamabad 966 km. Khairpur is noted for its bountiful harvest of dates. Its is very hot and sunny during the summer and cold in winter. Khairpur was an industrially much more advanced than Pakistan producing leather goods, carpets, silk clothing, matches, soap, shoes, cigarettes to name a few. It also had the largest factories in textiles, tobacco redrying, and silk weaving in the sub continent.

The National Highway old Karachi road, Therhi-Ranipur bypass, Railway lines, Rohri canal and Mirwah canal passing thorough Khairpur city from its east and west, including special economic zone is here and which has increased it's importance in view of trade, commerce and socio economic links with other parts of the country also part of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Historical and Religious places in Khairpur city are Faiz Mahal, Garhi Pul, Dargah Syed Bachal Shah Buhkhari, Bara Alam, many munders of Hindu and churches of Christian communities.

The important places in the city are; District / central Jail, Railway station, Bilawal Bhuto Zardari Park, Three Overfly bridges, District & Session Judge Courts, Radio Pakistan,Sachal Sarmast Library, Sachal Auditorium, Gymkhana, Gymkhana for ladies, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Open Air Theater, Maryam Canon, NADRA mega centre, Nusrat Bhutto Secretariat (one unit) and Khairpur Special Economic Zone etc.
